FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web consists of hundreds of thousands of web servers around the world that store data and transmit files from one machine to another via the Internet.  Using a web browser, a user can click on hyperlinks and easily move from one web page to another and from one website to another, without having to enter cryptic or complex file names.

What is a Web Browser?

A Web Browser is a computer program that is used to display web pages and interact with websites.  Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) is one of the most widely used web browser at the moment and is used by roughly 80 - 90% of Internet users. Other web browsers are Netscape Navigator, Firefox, Opera and Safari to name a few.  There are others, but these are the most recognizable.

Web Browsers communicate with Web Servers using a communication protocol called Hyper Text Transport Protocol or HTTP.
What is a Hyper Text Transfer Protocol or HTTP?

Hyper Text Transport Protocol (HTTP) is a communication protocol that is used to request and transmit files over the Internet and other networks. It is the principal method for swapping information over the World Wide Web.  Because most web browsers default to the HTTP protocol, it is normally not necessary to even have to enter "HTTP://" when requesting a web page within the address bar these days.

In response to an HTTP request from a web browser, the web server responds by returning a status code such as "200 OK" and one or more requested files such as html pages, graphics, scripts and applets that the web browser can then assemble to display as a web page from the website you are attempting to view.
What is a Website?

A website is a series of related web pages that share a common domain name and are linked by a series of hyperlinks.  Websites can be built directly on a server or built on a personal computer and "published" to a web server.

What is a Web Server?

Web server can sometimes refer to a server computer and sometimes to the web server software that runs on a server computer.

How much does a Website cost?

There are a few factors that always affect the final cost of a website. These factors include how many pages are within the site, if the site is planning to sell products, all of the graphic work involved, and how interactive the website will be. Lastly, in deciding what the cost will be, you will also need to purchase web hosting and domain name registration.  All of this can be done easily through PayPal.com
Is PayPal Secure?

PayPal has become one of the premier payment methods over the Internet.  It is the accepted and preferred payment option of many reputable organizations, one of them being EBAY.com.  Click here to review their Security Center webpage for more information.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a specific website address that you choose.  I will of course assist you with making your choice if need be.  They typically end in .com, .net, and .org. There are many more, and I offer availability to a majority of them, and some vary in cost.  An example is my domain name ‘jd-web-designs.com.’

What domain name should I choose?

This decision all depends on how you are going to promote and use your site. If you are planning to tell people over the phone, choose one that is easy to say and spell out loud. Above all, I would choose one that is memorable and not confusing.
What can a website do for me?

The answer to this is neither short nor easy. With a little research and reflection on what it is you want from your site, you can find numerous reasons, but here are a few general statements that may help you realize your needs.

A website is globally accessible and can reach the millions of people that might not otherwise be available to your services due to their location, mode or availability of transportation, and simply put; the ease of utilizing services that are provided to them, with little or no effort to themselves.  The Internet brings you and your business straight to them.  Customers can view products, services, or whatever you want to share from the comfort of their own home.

No matter what type of business you have, there are more ways to grow and make money on the web for you then you could probably imagine.

Your customers and or potential customer will never have to wait on hold, be annoyed by pushy salesmen or worry about ‘business hours,’ while accessing your products or services via your website.
How long does it take to have a website designed?

The time frame of the completion of the design of your site is determined by the number of pages within your website as well as the complexity of your site design.  During the initial correspondence, a proposed time frame can be provided, if reliable information regarding what is expected of your site is supplied to the designer.

Why does it matter how it looks as long as it works?

When someone visits your site, they will instantly perceive the quality of your company and its services or products. The first impression a customer or potential customer gets depends on the appearance of your website.

A visitor will be more interested in exploring your site if it is appealing and easy to navigate. Remember, you are marketing yourself and your business to the WORLD over the Internet and it is important to show your best, right from the very beginning.
What is a URL?

This stands for ‘Universal Resource Locator.’ This is the address typed in to view your web page on the Internet. For example, you would type in ‘http://www.jd-web-designs.com’ to access our home page.

What is HTML?

HTML or Hypertext Markup Language is the language used to format web pages.  It is comprised of a set of "tags" that identify the size, color, font and position of data on a web page.  It is used to define the page layout and the positioning of text and graphics.  HTML also allows hyperlinks to be added on words and images, as well as to embed various languages (JavaScript, VBScript) into HTML.  These features are instrumental in the continual growth of Internet usage, as it allows Internet users to easily navigate from page to page and from site to site without having to remember obscure internet IP Addresses.

What is an IP Address?

An IP Address or "Internet Protocol Address" is the address of a device that is connected to a network.  The device is more often than not a personal computer or a server computer.

An IP Address can either be static or dynamic. Server computers and network devices that need to be accessed by multiple clients normally use static addresses.  Personal computers connected to the Internet could either have a static or dynamic IP Address.  For example, each time a "dial-up" telephone connection is made to a hosting company, a different IP address is normally assigned for that one session.  High speed cable connections, however, often involve static connections.

Registries such as ARIN (the American Registry for Internet Numbers) are responsible for assigning blocks of IP Addresses to organizations that are then free to allocate the addresses as they like.
What is Web Hosting?

Web hosting is a monthly / yearly fee that you pay to have your site accessible on the Internet. We can provide web hosting for all of our clients.

If I choose to have you design my website, can I still use my own web hosting?

Yes, of course you can.  After the completion of the website design, I can mail you a CD copy of the custom web design via the delivery option of your choice.

What is Site Maintenance?

Maintenance is a fee paid monthly or hourly to keep your site updated with new content that you provide. Most good web sites have new content updated on a regular basis. Fresh content is what will keep your visitors coming back, and keep the feeling of originality and reliability of your site.

Will my site be available to view in both Internet Explorer (IE) and Netscape?

Yes. Your site will be tested for browser compatibility in both Netscape and Internet Explorer once it is in the final stages of completion. These two browsers account for approximately 90% of all users.
Can my website be used to increase efficiency with my employees?

Most businesses perceive the Internet as an opportunity to expand their sales through traditional e-commerce, while few people are aware of the opportunities of increasing efficiency and reducing expenses. Placing business processes, especially those done daily, on the internet is possible for all types of businesses.  In doing so, you increase production abilities, while reducing a major portion of unnecessary expenses.

Who ‘owns’ the website after it is created?

The website that is custom designed for you is completely yours.  You own it 100%, no question whatsoever. But, I do reserve the right to display any development such as web design, banner, logo or other within my online portfolio if desired to show as an example.

If I pay for a custom design, will it be used again by you in future custom developments?

NO. All of my web designs are custom made for each project. I pride itself on inimitable design and development. With over a million web design ideas available these days, I DO NOT have to resort to ‘duplicating’ websites.  There may of course be minor similarities here and there, but all of my custom web designs are as ‘unique’ as can be expected.
I still don't think a website will do anything for me, is this true?

No not really, especially when you carefully consider everything that a website has to offer.  Many people overlook the various products, services, or business processes they can include on a website. Any communications or interactions that happen within your business can be made easier and more efficiently by the web. Your business will SAVE MONEY as well as TIME while appealing to a much greater audience: THE WORLD
